The "unsinkable" <I>Titanic</I> was believed to be the safest ship afloat. But in 1912, while crossing the Atlantic on its first voyage, the <I>Titanic</I> sank after striking an iceberg. About 1,500 people died in the disaster, and some 700 survived.
